Official Opening of St Mary’s Play Area
Yate Town Council was delighted to be joined by children from St Mary’s C.E Primary School ‘School Council’ for the official opening of the refreshed St Mary’s Play Area on Monday 30th January 2017.
The plans for the refresh began as a consultation session with children from St Mary’s School Council back in 2015. They met with Yate Town Council to talk about the facilities they’d like to see in the park. Some of the ideas which the children came up with have been directly incorporated into the new scheme – including a goal area, a trampoline, a small spinning climbing net and new slides. Mr J. Bird, Headteacher of St Mary’s C.E Primary School praised the children for their input into the process, and said this project shows that getting involved and expressing your ideas can help to shape the future of what happens.
Councillor John Ford, Chair of the Yate Town Council Play Area Projects Group said ‘Yate Town Council is delighted to open this refurbished play area – it offers a wider range of new and exciting play activities for young people. Play areas like this one are really important, which is why in spite of these times of budget cuts, Yate Town Council is making sure our young people still have these valuable facilities.’
The Mayor of Yate, Councillor Tony Davis, who conducted the official opening alongside the children, said it was ‘wonderful to see how excited the children were when they saw the refreshed play area.’
George Williams (aged 11) said ‘the new park is good – I really like the new swings’ whilst Sophie Elkins (aged 11) said ‘I think it’s amazing – it has much more things to play on than before.’
Yate Town Council secured a New Homes Bonus grant to enable the refresh to take place.Yate Town Council’s next big project is anticipated to be the refresh of the play area at Brinsham Fields and Lake. Public consultation sessions are being planned for later this year to help shape the plans for the future of a new exciting destination play area for North Yate.
